I’m too disorganized to even know where to start. Should I get a few things under control before showing you the madness?
Don’t worry about that–it’s what you’re hiring me to help with, right? Don’t be embarrassed about something you haven’t been doing or something you are disorganized with. No judgment! It will be helpful for me to see what your usual routine is and what gets forgotten about or procrastinated. Then I’ll be able to better help you put systems in place to prevent things from getting out of hand in the future.
I really want to get my business on the right track but I just don’t have time right now. Should I wait until things calm down a bit before working with you?
My instinct is to tell you that you will ALWAYS feel too busy to start. I would urge you to take the plunge anyway, trusting that putting in the time and effort WILL BE WORTH IT. That said, if you are right smack in the middle of a busy season (shooting ten weddings this month, say), maybe let’s hold off for a month or two. I’ll be asking you to make a few changes immediately to help you stay accountable to yourself so you’ll need to make sure you have a couple hours per week to make the progress that will make this investment worth it. (And I promise that it will be, if you put in the time and effort.)
I need help finding products and software that will keep things on track. Do you know of any good ones?
YES. I have lots of recommendations, both free and paid. Actually, I am pretty proud of my ability to run my own business with NO monthly fees or subscription services beyond website costs. I’d be happy to share what I use and recommend as part of our consulting session.
My bookkeeping is a mess and completely out of date. Can you help me?
Yes! I’m no accountant, but I love talking about finances and would love to help you get them organized. Whether you want to use simple spreadsheets or something more robust like Quickbooks, I’d be happy to share my strategies for keeping invoices, taxes, and expenses in check.
I need help with pricing/marketing/social media/branding/SEO. Can you help me?
I wish! I love talking about all aspects of business, but these topics are not my specialty. I’d be happy to share any of my past experience and knowledge on pricing and branding during a consulting session, but if you need serious help in these areas, I would recommend working with someone who specializes in them.
What do you think about outsourcing?
I am a big fan of smart outsourcing and handing off the tasks you either can’t stand doing, never get around to, or aren’t very good at. However, if you’re at a point where you have more time than money, sometimes it can be better to wait. Another thing to make sure is that you bring on the RIGHT people (I can help you with that). Depending on what you need help with, some administrative work can even be outsourced to me.
I am in the beginning stages of business and not so busy. Should I wait until I am busier to work with you and put systems in place?
Not necessarily. Many overwhelmed business owners would tell you they wish they’d set up working systems before things got crazy for them. I probably wouldn’t recommend investing in my services when you are in your first year of business, but once you have an idea of how you want your business to be run and who you want to work with and how, I’d love to help get things started on the right track from the get-go.
I don’t have enough money to hire you right now, but I know I need help. What can I do in the meantime?
If you need an inexpensive resource to get things started on your own, I’d recommend reading The E-Myth, by Michael Gerber. Also, keep in mind that if you can find the cash to let me help you streamline, simplify, and organize your business, you’ll free up LOTS more hours to put toward doing more of what makes you money. It really is an investment in your business (and sanity).
